Comparison Key Details
- Protection Level: ASTM Level 3 is for maximum protection, where as standard 3-ply masks are generally for lower-risk, daily, or community use.
- Fluid Resistance: Level 3 masks are tested to resist fluid penetration at 160 mmHg, crucial for surgical settings.
- Filtration: Level 3 masks offer >Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) and Particle Filtration Efficiency (PFE) at microns.
- Structure: Both often feature 3-ply construction (spun-bond/melt-blown/spun-bond), but Level 3 ensures higher density materials to meet strict safety standards.
- Fit: Level 3 masks often use ties for a tighter, more secure fit, whereas standard masks typically use ear loops.
What is the difference between Level 1, 2 and 3 Face Masks?
Surgical face masks are generally graded through ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials), which publishes the technical standards for products, materials, systems and the likes.
